The first manned Saturn V sits on the pad at Cape Kennedy in the dawn hours as NASA prepares to send men to the moon for the first time. The lunar lander is not ready yet, but no matter--the men aren't ready to land anyway.
It is December 21, 1968, a year of unprecendented turmoil in the country. America desparately needs this flight to go well -- and it does. The crew reads passages from the book of Genesis on Christmas Eve, while circling the moon. Someone remarked upon their return "You saved 1968."
