Apollo 8 was only the second manned Apollo flight. Only 23 months after the tragic Apollo 1 fire, Americans were poised to win the space race.

One of the unforseen vistas was seeing the earth rise over the lunar horizon for the first time in history, and this view left the crew gasping at the sight on Christmas Eve, 1968.

Signed in bright silver in the black sky. Lovell adds "Apollo 8".
