Only 23 months after the tragic Apollo 1 fire, Americans were poised to win the space race. One of the unforseen vistas was seeing the earth rise over the lunar horizon for the first time in history, and this view left the crew gasping at the sight on Christmas Eve, 1968. Signed in bright silver in the black sky. Lovell adds "Apollo 8". See this photo signed by Frank Borman

He had the most hours in space at that time, flying on Gemini 7 with Frank Borman for the first long duration (2 week) flight, and then again on the final Gemini 12 flight, with Buzz Aldrin, who iced his own flight to the moon with a textbook spacewalk, and working Agena rendezvous calculations in his head when Gemini's computer went down. Lovell just missed the cut for the original Seven Mercury astronauts, but was the first of the "New Nine" Gemini and Apollo crews. Today, at age 79, Lovell still flies his own aircraft to dozens of speaking engagements every year. Energetic as a man half his age, he is an eloquent and unapologetic advocate for the further exploration of space. Only available in 8"x10"

Before their miraculous return to earth on the 17th of April 1970, the crew would undergo a Herculean ordeal of explosions, a dead spacecraft, frozen instruments, oxygen deprivation, hunger and sickness. Only available in 8"x10"

The lunar lander is not ready yet, but no matter--the men aren't ready to land anyway. It is December 21, 1968, a year of unprecendented turmoil in the country. America desparately needs this flight to go well -- and it does. The crew reads passages from the book of Genesis on Christmas Eve, while circling the moon. Someone remarked upon their return "You saved 1968." SOLD OUT
