EXCLUSIVE!

This was the first mission patch flown to the moon, on the first manned lunar flight. Jim has inscribed each, "James Lovell--On board Apollo 8, 21-27 Dec, 1968. He has also individually signed the certificate of authenticity.

NASA made one of its boldest moves in sending only this second manned Apollo mission directly to the moon without a LM (unfinished at the time), in order to insure beating the Russians, whose moon rocket was on the pad at the time. This was also the first manned Saturn V launch.

The patch was Lovell's own design, which depicted the shape of the Apollo capsule, and the Figure-8 path they took to the moon and back.
