COMET OF THE CENTURY

Every hundred years or so, a great comet flashes across the sky for weeks, dazzling viewers on Earth. In fact, the best comets seem to be fresh, unexpected visitors from beyond the solar system who make the trip only once.

Though painted in 1991, this work accurately predicted the arrival and appearance of comet Hale-Bopp in 1996.

ATTITUDE HOLD

(Not 'Altitude') Wearing an MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit) enables astronauts to fly freely in space. In the "Attitude Hold" mode, the unit sets its gyroscopes and maintains a fixed position in space, firing its thrusters to compensate for any movement of the wearer.

This feature is handy for working on satellites, or for enjoying the view over the Gulf of Mexico, as seen here. This print is in the collections of several of the astronauts who have actually flown the MMU in space.

The city of Houston can be seen on the Texas coastline,
along with Brownsville (near the astronaut's feet), Corpus Christi and Austin.

VIEW FROM POLAR ORBIT

This an accurate view from the north polar region of Saturn's moon Tethys. The next moon in is Enceladus and then innermost Mimas.

NIGHTHAWK NEBULA

In this hypothetical nebula, the dust lanes form a hawk in flight. Ice and water planets look on.

GREEN PIECE (EMERALD DAWN)

This scene shows a hypothetical planet with a chlorine/flourine/neon atmosphere. Such a mixture may glow green in the morning twilight.

GLEN CANYON FANTASY

The redrock cliffs of Glen Canyon and Lake Powell were the inspiration for this painting. The combination of the erosion-sculpted sandstone and the azure water create a scene of otherworldly beauty.

NIGHT OF THE COMETS

Painted several months before the historic collision with Jupiter, this print shows smaller fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 shower among the clouds of Jupiter near dawn. A bright fragment lights up a nearby thunderhead like a Chinese lantern.

STARCATCHER

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M-51) in Canes Venaciti, near the Big Dipper, is actually an interacting pair of colliding galaxies.

Normally seen face-on from Earth, the Artist has rendered an impossible view, close up, at a shallow angle. The smaller galaxy passed too close to the larger one, and was "captured" by one of its spiral arms.

The Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered a possible black hole at the center of this bright galaxy. This is our largest print.

PISTACHIO CRATER

Dawn breaks on a hypothetical planet with ice the color of pistachio ice cream. At the base of a crater, we see a giant gas planet looming on the horizon.

VIEW FROM A DISTANT CANYON

On Dione, a moon of Saturn, the impact of an ancient comet has created a labyrinth of polar canyons called the Tibur Chasmae. From this location, Saturn will always appear near the horizon, and its rings will be seen as a thin band stretching along the equator.

TEAL SKIES

On other planets, atmospheres are made up of strange or exotic mixtures of gases. All the planets in our solar system have different colored skies, and this is probably consistent throughout the universe.

Here is a planet with a dusty green sky, orbiting a giant ringed planet similar to those discovered recently.

MAGNETIC STORM

The Aurorae or Northern Lights, are a spectacular sight in the Earth's polar regions. High-energy plasmas from solar eruptions dance along Earth's magnetic field lines, which converge near the poles.

The Aurorae can manifest itself in many different colors and shapes. Here the "green curtains" are seen, which often flow and flicker during auroral displays.

NEPTUNE

Painted shortly after the Voyager 2 encounter in 1989, Neptune shows its stripes. The eighth planet has an unusually warm and active atmosphere.

Shown are the Great Dark Spot (which has since disappeared) and the "Wizard's Eye" in the southern hemisphere.

FIREBIRD NEBULA

This hypothetical nebula is hydrogen-rich and glows with a characteristic electric pink. We see a newly formed planet lit by two blue-white supergiant stars. Rivers of molten lava glow through the newly formed crust.

FRAMED in a diamond shape, with a circular double mat. This would be very expensive to do yourself or have done, considering the large size.

DAWN IN THE LABYRINTH

In an area of the Mariner Valley on Mars is the Labyrinthus Noctis (Labyrinth of the Night) where early morning water fog is often seen in spacecraft photos.

In the sky on the left is Phobos, which moves so fast it will cross the sky nearly three times daily, and the Earth and Venus on the right.

CUMULONIMBUS

One of Kim's early works; his cloud technique developed early, due in part to the billowing thunderheads of his native Arizona. The cumulonimbus clouds (Anvil-heads) are responsible for the most violent thunderstorms.

SPLENDOR IN THE GAS

The Orion nebula is perhaps the most beautiful in the sky. The nearest of its type to Earth, about 1500 light years away, it is a region of intense stellar formation. In fact the whole huge constellation of Orion is a stellar nursery.

VISTA GALACTICA

This desert planet, 20,000 light years distant, has a spectacular view of the Milky Way galaxy.

LEAVING TOWN

One of Kim's most enduring pieces. They say the Saguaro cacti, peculiar to Arizona and northern Mexico, are disappearing. Could this be the reason why?

Saguaro (Suh-WAR-oh) cactus grows to be hundreds of years old, and up to 50 feet high. The arms may take up to 75 years to develop.
