THE LUNAR SOUTH POLE

Don is a master of "over the shoulder" lighting, which is very dramatic, but a difficult exercise in shadowing.

A real place, This is an area of the lunar south pole, from about 90km altitude, -77 degrees south, 178 degrees east.

In this painting, painted in 1994 just before the fiery impact of comet Shoemaker Levy 9 with Jupiter, Don shows accurately what it looked like when a larger fragment enters the atmosphere, along with associated debris.

A scene accurately depicting the Earth-sized fireball that ensued with each fragment's catastrophic dive of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 into the atmosphere of Jupiter.

The scars from the event lasted for weeks.
