EARLY EARTH BOMBARDMENT

This painting was commissioned by  American Scientist magazine. It shows a comet  nucleus approaching impact with Earth. The article was about a theory on how Earth possibly got much of its abundant water from early comets. Published in American Scientist Sept/Oct. 2001.

Archivally framed to last for generations. Acid-free suede/metallic mats, non glare UV plexiglass. Aluminum antique gold frame.

COMET SURFACE EXPLORER

Here Dr. Hartmann shows a comet craft, designed to land on a comet and test the surface and the atmosphere. "Pedestal rocks" are probably typical of the evaporating comet's surface.

COLLISION ON SATURN'S MOON

The moons of the outer planets show the scars of eons of bombardment, some large enough to have shattered the satellite.

CHIRON

Dr. Hartmann's field is small bodies, like asteroids. Chiron is a mid-sized planetoid, a small asteroid or a very large comet. It orbits between Saturn and Uranus, approaching both from time to time, and exhibits some outgassing typical of comets.

A large planet of several Jupiter masses was recently discovered around a star in Pegasus. This planet lies so close to the star it is probably red-hot.
