Morning Launch

by by Kim Poor

Kim's all-time favorite painting is also the most scarce of the sold out prints, painted shortly after the third launch of the space shuttle Columbia in 1982. He used only a model, since there were not many photos, and there never will be of this angle! In this view only possible through the eyes of the artist, the shuttle is about a minute into flight, doing nearly Mach 1. This painting fooled even those at NASA, who kept searching their files for this "photo" upon seeing it on the cover of the L5 NEWS. This was the cover of our 1996 Kim Poor Calendar, now itself a collector's item.
