Buzz Aldrin On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong landed their Lunar Module Eagle on the Moon's Sea of Tranquility and became the first two humans to walk on the Moon's surface. This year will be the 40th Anniversary of this historic event! On an earlier mission, in November 1966, Buzz and commander James Lovell were launched in Gemini 12, and brought the Gemini program to a successful close when they returned safely to earth. Aldrin had spent 5 1/2 hours on a groundbreaking EVA outside the spacecraft. Colonel Aldrin (b. 1930) graduated from West Point third in his class, flew 66 combat missions in F-86's while on duty in Korea, and shot down 2 enemy MIGs. He was commander of the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB. He earned a doctorate at MIT in 1963 with his thesis on orbital rendezvous, the procedures of which he can calculate in his head. An accomplished author as well, his memoir MAGNIFICENT DESOLATION is due out later this year, as is his second children's book LOOK TO THE STARS.
