Charles Kohlhase led the design of deep-space robotic missions to Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, including close encounters with many of their moons and rings. For his major contributions to scientific return over nearly half a century, he has received NASA's highest award, the Distinguished Service Medal. Charley has an asteroid named in his honor, and was cited by the international magazine Spaceflight as the leading designer of deep-space missions. He continues to consult for NASA/JPL on several different flight and technology projects, is an exhibited photographer and digital artist, believes in blending art and science for maximum public engagement, fervently supports all environmental causes, and is working on a major book and website ( http://artshow.com/kohlhase for the near future, and http://charleysorbit.com planned for release in 2010) "Art and Science - Adventures in Creativity" Both formal discipline and unbridled creativity have joined forces over the ages to produce many great works of art and science. This talk will present many examples from different fields that reveal the spectrum of creative processes and end results that have been achieved. Examples include da Vinci, orderly vs random-based artworks, the interplay of space art and space science, Zipf's Law, the Golden Mean, genes and memes, from Kepler to gravity assist, secrets of deep space mission design, Mars sample return options, the Quantum Quest IMAX film under production, the nature of the creative process, and the challenges of the future.
