Charlie Walker Charlie became an astronaut in a unique manner. He trained astronauts on STS 4,6,7, & 8 in the operation of an electrophoresis machine, a biomedical apparatus which was the first production device to take advantage of prolonged weightlessness. He was its most skilled operator.

Working at NASA contractor McDonnell-Douglas on space shuttle propulsion, he was intimately familiar with the shuttle. NASA decided to fly him on three shuttle flights to operate the complex machinery himself, as a payload specialist.
