PHOENIX IN AUGUST?

We wanted most schools to be out; for it to be vacation time for US and Europe; and Phoenix is a major airline hub, with nonstops to and from major US cities and Europe; and it's close to our Novaspace HQ in Tucson. Sunsets are tremendous. Phoenix is a good starting point for day trips to cool Kitt Peak National Observatory, (and dozens of other world-class observatories around Tucson) or travel north to the cool alpine area of Flagstaff (Lowell Observatory, USGS Astro-geology) Grand Canyon, or Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater or Lake Powell.

TOO HOT?

Actually, due to global warming, it's become a lot less miserable than many other cities in the summer; It's much drier, with humidity usually in the single digits. In addition, everyplace is comfortably (and reliably) refrigerated (Phoenix wouldn't exist otherwise.) Swimming pools abound. That's why it the fastest growing city population in the US.

VACATION IN ARIZONA

Arizona has one of the largest variations in elevation and climate of any state, year-round; packed into a smaller area than overpopulated, overpriced California. If you want cool temperatures, head for the high country in Northern Arizona. It has volcanoes, canyons, lakes and redrock. Arizona leads the planet in varied, incredible scenery. It's a photographer's paradise.
