Fast Times on the Ocean of Storms

Fast Times on the Ocean of Storms

by Alan Bean
Print: 22 in x 28 in
Framed: 28 in x 34 in

I painted myself almost flying over the surface of the moon. Running on the moon isn't like running on earth, mostly because the pull of gravity is only one-sixth of what we feel down here. I was light on my feet, much as I expected. When I pushed off with one foot, there was a long pause before I landed on the other foot, like running in slow motion. I could feel my leg muscles completely relax as I glided along to the next stop. I seemed to float just above the surface. - Alan Bean

Heavenly Reflections

Heavenly Reflections

by Alan Bean
Print: 27 in x 21 in
Framed: 32 in x 26 in

I have painted Pete Conrad and myself 239,000 miles from Earth during the Apollo XII mission standing on the Ocean of Storms, looking homeward. Pete and I had come a long way together. He is the best astronaut I have ever known. As we looked up, the sky was a deep, shiny black. As I touched Pete's shoulder, I thought 'Can all the people that we know or have seen or have heard of be up on that tiny blue marble?' It was a wondrous moment. -Alan Bean

Feelin

Feelin' Fine

by Alan Bean
Print: 15 in x 21.5 in
Framed: 17 in x 23 in

FEELIN' FINE is one of the artist's favorite works. This work conveys a certain attitude on the part of this astronaut, not easy to do in a faceless spacesuit. This is a confident moonwalker.

Here is an excellent opportunity to own a SIGNED Alan Bean art print for less than the cost of his signature alone! Signed in gold by Alan Bean. Image is 12x18. Open edition (not numbered).

Monet

Monet's Moon

by Alan Bean
Canvas: 11 in x 16 in

I began these studies a number of years ago to record some of my memories of seeing the Moon close up. My first study showed how Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon, and I saw the Moon an hour or so after we thrusted out of lunar orbit heading for home. The Moon appeared exactly as if we were looking at a large black-and-white photograph, because of the strong direct backscatter of sunlight by the lunar dirt. I could not recognize the Moon as a sphere, only as a flat disc. The study was technically accurate, but to me an unartistic black-white-painting. I set it aside.

My first try at this second study was an unsuccessful attempt to show the pronounced blue of the reflected earth light as it strikes the shadow area of the Moon. It was unartistic; blue-gray, black-and-white painting. I set it aside. I did several others with similar results. Years later I decided to rework two of these studies as color exercises. The first - Monet's Moon - was painted with my favorite artist in mind. -Alan Bean

This is a gallery wrapped canvas, which needs no frame, because the canvas is stretched behind, stapled in place on the back, and the sides are then painted black. A hanging wire is installed, and it's ready to hang.
