Charle Duke served as the Capcom during the first lunar landing of Apollo 11. He made his own walk on the lunar surface as lunar module pilot three years later on Apollo 16, the 10th of 12 moonwalkers, with mission commander John Young.

Born in North Carolina and raised in South Carolina, Charlie entered the Air Force upon graduation from the Naval Academy in 1957, becoming a distinguished fighter pilot in jet fighters of the day. He received a Master's degree in Aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964. He was picked as a NASA astronaut in 1966.

He and his wife of 44 years, Dottie live in the Texas hill country. His hobbies include fishing, hunting and reading. He also is a skilled golfer. He gives many talks on Christian values, and runs the Duke Ministry for Christ.


Charlie wiill be heading up a foursome in Thursday's Moonwalker Invitational golf tournament.
